Nitrogen, thanks to its inert properties, is the most widely used gas in this type of packaging. This article explains why it works, how it differs from vacuum packing and when it makes sense as a preservation technique for CBD buds.

Why oxygen is the bud’s main enemy

Atmospheric oxygen (O₂) reacts with the cannabinoids, terpenes and other compounds in the bud through oxidation processes that degrade its quality. CBD oxidises slowly, turning into inactive compounds. Terpenes, which are responsible for the aroma, are especially vulnerable: oxidation alters their profile irreversibly, dulling the most delicate aromas.

In addition, oxygen encourages the growth of aerobic microorganisms (bacteria that need oxygen to survive) and, in the presence of moisture, can contribute to the appearance of mould. Reducing or eliminating the oxygen inside the packaging is the most effective strategy for slowing down all these deterioration processes.

Vacuum packing vs nitrogen packing: the differences

Vacuum packing removes virtually all the air from the packaging, including the oxygen. It is effective for preservation, but it has a drawback for buds: the negative pressure crushes the bud’s delicate structure, compressing the trichomes and altering its appearance. For a product where visual presentation is part of the perceived quality, this is a significant disadvantage.

Nitrogen packing (or packing under a nitrogen atmosphere) solves this problem. Instead of removing the air, it displaces it by injecting nitrogen (N₂), an inert gas, into the packaging. The result is an oxygen-free interior at normal pressure: the bud is not crushed and keeps its structure. Nitrogen does not react with cannabis compounds, has no smell and is completely safe.

How the nitrogen packing process works

Nitrogen packing for cannabis requires specific equipment. The basic procedure is as follows: the buds are placed in an airtight container (usually a resealable bag or a jar with a valve), the air inside is purged with a stream of nitrogen, and the container is then hermetically sealed.

Nitrogen packing equipment comes in different ranges, from basic manual systems (an N₂ cylinder with a pressure regulator and nozzle) to automated modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) lines that precisely control the composition of the gas inside. For craft producers, the simpler systems are perfectly functional.

Food-grade and industrial nitrogen is available in cylinders from technical gas suppliers. It is important to use nitrogen of certified quality, not unpurified industrial nitrogen that could contain traces of contaminants.

How much nitrogen extends shelf life

Nitrogen storage can extend the shelf life of CBD buds very significantly compared with storage in ordinary packaging exposed to air. Under controlled temperature (15-20 °C) and in darkness, studies on comparable plant products suggest that removing oxygen can extend shelf life by 3 to 5 times compared with conventional packaging.

For premium CBD flowers destined for distribution with long periods between production and use, nitrogen packing can mean the difference between a product that reaches the customer with its aromatic profile intact and one that has noticeably lost its qualities during transport and storage.

Uses in the quality CBD market

Nitrogen packing is becoming a quality standard for premium CBD. Producers competing at the top end of the market, indoor buds of selected strains with complex terpene profiles, use nitrogen as a point of differentiation and a guarantee of quality. Nitrogen valves on the packaging or the wording “packaged in a protective atmosphere” on the label are signs that the producer has invested in the quality of the preservation process.

Sources and scientific references

Kader, A.A.
